Come enjoy an ALL-STAR performance of jazz each Monday, Thursday and Saturday night!!! We kick off Monday night jazz starting at 8:30pm until 11pm; Thursday night jazz from 8pm to 10pm; and Saturday night jazz from 9pm to midnight.
The sounds of jazz embody a level of eloquence, passion, sophistication, and emotion that makes it, "a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support and resources to make certain it is preserved, understood and promulgated," according to the United States Congress.
At Beyu Caffe, we aim to promote an environment where persons are relaxed through the smooth sounds of classical jazz while also appreciating the sounds of today. We are currently working with Dr. Ira Wiggins and Professor Brian Horton, the Director and Professor of Jazz Studies (respectively) at North Carolina Central University, to maintain Jazz as the vanguard in modern music, while attempting to search and propel the next great Branford Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, /or Louis Armstrong. Come hear amazing students from the NCCU Jazz Program on Thursday nights.
Our message to "be you," not only applies to our loyal friends and future patrons, but also to local artists. At Beyu Caffe, we seek out the most dedicated and talented poetry artists to help maintain and promote integrity through spoken word—a more commonly used expression for poetry. In the words of Bob Holman, a prominent poet and activist, spoken word is "the democratization of verse...it gives depth to the nation's dialogue that you don't normally hear on the floor of Congress."
Beyu Poetry Slam is featured every 1st and 3rd Friday Night at 10:00pm. It provides a broad range of voices, faces, styles, cultural traditions, and approaches to writing and performance. Our intention is to foster a positive and fun environment which could propel the next great Langston Hughes or Jessica Care Moore. Beyu Caffe is currently working with the renowned poet, Dasan Ahanu, who is currently a professor of creative writing at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC and coaches Durham's well-known Bull City Slam Team.
