Beyu Caffe (pronounced be-you) was founded in 2009 by Dorian Bolden to be the ultimate community gathering place where everyone could “be you”. The name and idea stems from Dorian’s lifelong experiences in various social and cultural settings whereby he believes that we all have more in common than we do differences; and he believes that if you ultimately believe in yourself and the God-given talents you were born with, then God and the Universe will handle everything else. Ultimately, you simply need to be true to yourself and “be you”.
The Beyu Caffe Story
Our story starts with friends and community members helping Dorian develop Beyu Caffe's signature coffee blend. Beyu's signature coffee blend is named Heart & Soul [make italics] because one of the participants noted that the coffee was smooth and delicious that it touched her very heart and soul. Ten years later our Heart & Soul Blend remains popular and a favorite in the community.
Dorian began selling coffee beans from his home letting everyone know about his dream and vision to open Beyu Caffe while also speaking on his entrepreneurial journey involving doing research; writing a business plan; and seeking investors.
In December 2009, Beyu Caffe opens its doors to the public.
Beyu Caffe started as a coffee cafe with amazing coffee and delicious food, but was now garnering regional recognition as a music powerhouse venue. Beyu Caffe was featured in several news publications and on television; we didn't see this coming!
In December 2014, Beyu Caffe reached a milestone achievement in business reaching its 5th birthday. Unfortunately, our location was in jeopardy due to the boom happening in downtown Durham. The company realized that it needed to find a permanent home or else it may face closure due to the rapid increase in downtown rent prices. Beyu Caffe recognized that it was necessary to locate a new home, and underwent a $1.2 million commercial development project to find a new home. The community played a vital role and rallied behind Beyu's efforts, helping it achieve a successful Kickstarter campaign for needed kitchen equipment!
In May 2016, Beyu Caffe officially finds a new home at 341 W. Main Street and is ready to move forward.
Beyu Caffe branches out and expands to Duke University, the alma mater of the owner and founder Dorian Bolden by opening Beyu Blue Coffee in honor of the Duke Blue Devils. Beyu Blue Coffee is a grab-and-go concept specializing in premium coffee and dope specialty espresso drinks. The Duke community welcomed Beyu Blue with much love!
At the start of 2019, Beyu Caffe made the difficult decision to say good-bye to its live music operation in order to focus on its coffee and restaurant operations, and concentrate on delivering delicious food and coffee. Beyu Caffe later expanded to include Beyu Catering. Today Beyu Caffe, Beyu Blue Coffee, and Beyu Catering comprise of our total operations. As we continue to grow, we will see where the universe will take us.
